Freshman Days - Gym...the Best Class on Earth? Locker Rooms too? (Part I)

The choice is yours; do you want to choose Physical Education for the 2 required years? Or do you want to join R.O.T.C (Reserved Officer Training Corps)?

I...being the lazy person that I am...opted to take P.E. for my first two years. I thought to myself that "Nothing could be as bad as the things I had to face in middle and elementary school, high school should let you off easier since you're grown", but boy was I wrong...
Not only is it more tiring than it was back then, it consists more of running than any fun activity and its every day!

You're probably curious as to what it is I'm doing in gym and why I named this post "Gym..the Best Class on Earth", right? Let me explain...

The first day I stepped foot into that long gym, I noticed that there was a divider smack dab in the middle. This divider separated two different gym classes that happened at the same period; your class was either in Gym A or in Gym B. My gym class was located in Gym A (I'll explain why I said 'was' in a little while). My heart stopped for a brief moment as I thought in my mind 'We're going to run around this gym one day...Even if it's smaller than the real thing, it's still bigger than my other gyms...', then my heartbeat regulated when I heard our gym teacher (who turned out to be the girls' cross country coach, what great luck! *sarcasm*) walk into the room.

"Alright, I'm going to give you your seating charts according by last name," he said as he held the attendance list in the bend of his arm.

Seating charts?? We actually were going to have seating arrangements in gym class! I remember laughing at the thought until hearing my last name called. I sat second to last in this little row, and I was the "leader" of my column...at least I think that's how it works, I don't even know. So, of course, the first week wasn't so bad; I made a couple of friends, got a feel of how the gym teacher acted, and felt good about the choice I made for taking the class! ...That is...until the second week hit.

Our Gym Teacher told us that we were going to be starting softball, sounds like fun right? Wrong-o! There was a sneaky little twist! We weren't going to be playing softball everyday like I thought we would; we would be playing it every other day. And what would we be doing those other days..? Why RUNNING of course! Yay...
So at the end of the class, I was always tired out, sore, and out of breath as I moseyed my way into the girl's locker room to change and get ready for my next class, Survey of Lit (which happens to be the class I'm writing this blog for right now :]). This reaction to the harsh running of 8 laps or so around the block (mind you we were playing softball outside in the cold, wetness of September and running around the park when we weren't on the field) carried on for the rest of my days.

Even after we stopped playing softball, after about 5 or so weeks, we were still running! Soon those 8 laps slowly increased in distance..9 laps...10 laps...20 laps...Okay, maybe 20 laps is pushing it, ha ha, but it sure felt like I was running that many.

Although I'm only saying the bad about gym right now, there were a few good moments here and there that make me happy to be with the class of Gym A, 6th period. My friends and I have made a lot of inside jokes, and we're still laughing at them! We normally all cluster in a group when we're running our laps so we can all laugh and talk about something; heck, sometimes we even sing too...mostly it's me doing the singing :P.
As time progressed...my gym days slowly started getting better and better as actually I looked forward to that period of the day, but we'll save more details on that for next time...this post has only just begun to "run its course"!
