Freshman Days - Gym...the Best Class on Earth? Locker Rooms too? (Part II)

In Part I, I talked of the first days of Gym; how it began, the running routines, etc. But now, I'd like to talk about something I've absolutely come to hate (and many would probably agree with me on this)...

Locker rooms.

There's nothing good I can say about the locker rooms at my school - at least the girls locker rooms. The air there is always hot and muggy, at times the place smells musty, and the lockers...oh gosh the lockers.

First of all, I had to buy another lock to use for my gym locker because if your belongings aren't safely secured, something of yours will most likely get taken. I'm the type of person who will, occasionally, forget something important, so what I did was I got a bright red combination lock and placed it in the phone pocket of my purse - that way as soon as I open my purse to get something, I would always see it in there. If you don't have a gym lock, you either have to 'bunk' with someone else, or take the risk of shoving your stuff in the lockers and hoping nothing happens.

There's another thing I want to mention also. The lockers are incredibly and annoyingly small in width! And it's not just the locker room lockers either, it's every single locker in the school! I don't understand why they make them so thin, what if you want to stuff your book bag in there one day? Or if you have a recital/performance of some sort and you had to bring an extra bag of clothes? Or if you had a project due at a later period and wanted to put it away until then? My locker partner and I could barely fit our winter coats in our locker - I don't want to even try stuffing something like a poster board in there too! ...But...I'm getting off topic...

Ahem, anyway... Aside from the annoyance of having to remember my lock and trying to stuff my Ackie sack (my friends nickname for my backpack since it's so large) in an incredibly tight space, there's also the problem with the temperature in the locker rooms. Think about how when you were young you'd always go outside and play in the summer air, and then come inside to the cool air conditioning. Okay, got it in mind?
Now imagine you're running outside in the summer heat the next day and you're all sweaty and very hot. You go inside your house to take a breather and it's the same temperature as outside, making it unbearably hotter on you. That's my locker room.

It truly baffles me that there are, from what I gathered, no working AC units in that little area, but the way I deal with it is as I'm changing to my normal clothes, I start splashing cold water from the sink onto my body - that's the only way I can get changed without passing out. (Oh! And not to mention it seems like the boys locker room is relatively decent since the boys in my gym class rarely complain!)

So in conclusion to these two part entries, the only advice I can give to you is: don't be like me.
Go join the ROTC as soon as possible.
